Jaguar XJ6 - XJ12 1968-1973 Series 1

As early as 1964 Jaguar started considering the replacement for the Mark X and 420G. The new design would be called the XJ6.
The Introduction in the first color brochure for the new model proclaimed "Enter the Private World of the Jaguar XJ6".
Upon it's introduction in September of 1968, the emphasis that had been put into the comfort and handling of the new model was evident.
The US XJ6 was powered by the 4.2L engine that had been in production for the earlier models for years. The power train was combined with the Borg Warner Model 8. In markets other than the US the XJ was paired with twin HD8 SU carburettors, while the US market saw the use of two Zenith Stromberg 175 CDs.The rear was powered by the same Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) that was first seen in the E-type, Mark X, 420G and S type since 1961. The gearing varied by market. The US first received the 3.54:1, and later used the 3.31:1. Markets other than the US also had 3.77:1 or 4.27:1, depending on the engine size or transmission. Limited Slip differentials weren't offered in the US market XJ6.
The Series 1 XJ6 was also the first Jaguar Saloon to implement the Rack and Pinion Steering system, and was given a redesigned braking system.
The interior retained the traditional Leather and Walnut trim Jaguar was known for. It boasted the familiar rocker switches, classic gauges, and now offered electric window lifts.
Markets outside the US also had the option of a 2.8L engine.
The Series 1 XJ12 was introduced in July 1972. It was powered by the same V12 engine that had been used in the E-type.
The XJ12 utilized 4 Zenith Stromberg 175 CD carburettors, and featured the 3.31:1 Power Lock differential and Borg Warner Model 12 transmission.
The interior of the XJ12 saw only minor changes, while the exterior boasted a new grille that was specific to the Series 1 XJ12.

The total production of the Series 1 XJ, including the Daimler variants, came to 98,527 cars.
